Week 7
Blog 9- Brainstorming ideas with the client
This week I have been focusing on layouts for each extension option and creating mood boards for materials and furniture. My approach for this project- no matter what extension size, was to use the natural light from the stunning bifold doors along the back of the house. The one thing that the client asked for was that this extension was contemporary and clean. In my opinion, the actual fittings for this extension are really important. I know that seems a bit obvious, but I believe interior design trends can change that quickly that you don’t want to design an extension of this size, around a trend you might not like after a few years. This is were I suggested to the client that we keep the walls, flooring, kitchen and bathroom fittings very neutral. That means that you can add colour through soft furnishings, that can be changed as many times as you want. That way you always have a neutral canvas to be working with. Below, are the initial design proposals I showed the client.
The client, in general, loved the layout of both extensions. They liked how both extensions worked and can see the flow. They also liked the idea of a neutral colour palette. However, the client has asked me to create mood boards for some different décor in the kitchen and bathroom, with more colour. They said that there was more of a chance of them going with the neutral décor, but just wanted to see what the extension would look like if there were more colours and patterns in it. I believe this is a great opportunity to get to know your client. You’re getting to know the do’s and don’ts and what they like, meaning that it is easier to communicate with them later down the line. It also means my design thought process is always fresh- after all, I don’t know who my next client will be.
If you compare both extension layouts on the above image, it is clear that there isn’t actually a massive difference. In the 60m2 extension, there is a more spacious entrance hallway, with a lot more storage. It does allow access to the extension which also makes the space feel more open. The issue with the smaller extension is that there isn’t as much space, for example in the tv room area or enough space for a hideaway desk. This is were I may need to look into more storage solutions in other parts of the house if we were to go with the smaller extension.
