Blog 13- Creating physical mood boards

Something I lacked doing in Uni was building physical mood boards, with real colours and textures. It’s not until I’m doing a project to this scale, that I realise how important textures are. You don’t want to over do it- then it becomes over bearing and you don’t want a room looking bland. Some colours go better together in your head than they do in real life.

I am aware that I am doing this step back to front, as you would normally use samples at the beginning. But due to covid, companies have taken a bit longer to send them out. However, it doesn’t harm to still do this step, as I think there’s always room for improvement.

I am a great believer in balance between expensive and cheaper options. A beautiful home can be achieved using a tight budget. You may want to invest in good flooring, or perhaps a good plasterer. As I always say, getting that blank canvas perfect is so important, as this will always be the base for what ever décor you have in your room. However, when it comes to furnishings, like light fittings, fabrics, ornaments and art work (the list is endless) what’s to say you can’t look for bargains. Doing your research I believe is the most difficult part of a reno job. You can quite literally save yourself hundreds of pounds going between companies. I understand people believe in quality over quantity, but I do think that when you have young kids or pets for instance, it’s expected that something will become worn over the years.

One of the main focal points in this extension, will be the antique brass top, industrial dining table. This table will probably be custom made therefore will cost a lot more than a standard, high street, bought table. However, you are paying for traditional craftsmanship, it will be durable and it is an essential part of my clients life- family and cooking. I can relate to the client as we still have our table, which has been in our family for 30 years- we actually built our extension around this table! Whereas, when it comes to things like coffee tables and soft furnishings, there is no need to pay ridiculous amounts. Your style changes over the years and things wear over time.

I know I have went off in a tangent, so now I will show you some of the samples. I am still waiting on some samples, like the brass metal for the dining table and paint samples, however they will be in the final catalogue submission.

Tv room mood board.
Dining room. I still need to add the metal sample in here.
Choosing the right panelling for the extension. Slight difference- top is lighter than the bottom. This image shows it in daylight and shade.
Flooring samples. Left-darker, right-Lighter. This will be in the herringbone parquet pattern.

I still need a kitchen mood board, which will show the terrazzo stone worktop with green units.
